Extensive research reveals food insecurity is a complex problem. Many people do not have the resources to meet their basic needs, challenges which increase a family’s risk of food insecurity. Though food insecurity is closely related to poverty, not all people living below the poverty line experience food insecurity and people living above the poverty line can experience food insecurity as well. Food insecurity does not exist in isolation, as many families are affected by multiple, overlapping issues like lack of affordable housing, social isolation, chronic or acute health problems, high medical costs, low wages or loss of income, providing care for extended family members, soaring education costs, on-going child care expenses, or transportation barriers.

Historically, Promise Place has recognized an ongoing need for food trauma intervention in the counties we serve. Food insecurity refers to a lack of available financial resources for food at the household level. In February of 2019, Promise Place formally launched its food pantry and opened our doors to the public. To date, and with the help of community volunteers and Promise Place staff, over 240,000 lbs of food has been distributed to clients, individuals in need, and Craven county residents. Please note: As of March 1, 2020, we have gifted over 9,000 food boxes!
